Multi Split systems
Multi Split systems consist of one outdoor unit running multiple indoor units. They are good for situations where their is limited space outside for more than one unit. Or if you just don't like the look of too many air conditioners outside. They are genarally more expensive to buy and install than seperate units due to the fact that the connecting pipes and electrical controls have to run back to one central place.
With seperate units, pipe runs are generally much shorter as the indoor and outdoor air conditioning units are place as close to each other as possible.
The pros and cons of Multi split systems.
Most people think that installing a multi split system air conditioner is going to be cheaper......it's not.
Generally speaking, multi split systems will cost at least $600 dollars more for a 2 head system. The actual units cost more to buy than 2 sepearate units and the installation is generally more expensive also. Why?
With single head systems installation of the out door unit is best if it is closer to the indoor unit in terms of installation cost.
This means less material and labour.
With a multi split system the indoor units need to be piped to one central point, meaning pipe runs are generally longer .
This means more material and more labour.
Also, if the out door unit ever has a problem and stops working, all the indoor units will stop working too.
If this happens in summer, having seperate units will mean you will at least have air conditioning units working while waiting for a service.
The main pro for mutli splits is basically less units outside. Some installations which have restricted space for an outdoor unit have no other choice but to go the mutli option.
Or if you just don't want more than one unit around your house it may be worth paying extra.
Other than that, if you do have the space, single systems are cheaper to install.
